3  General Category / The Oracle / Re: Maxing stats while leveling vs learning skills on: October 09, 2012, 12:31:47 pm
I always found doing the majority of statmaxxing early to be better. The returns are faster in the end.
Practices come faster early on, and the heavy investment into stats is more easily taken. In the upper levels,
when practices are coming singly for the most part, the quicker return comes from an immediate boost to, or
learning of, a new skill or spell. The overall cost is the same in the end, but the effects are appreciated sooner
this way, and a large portion of skills and spells are unneccesary early on, however fun and novel they may be.

Old suggestion, believe the answer was he can't or he don't wanna.... either way

Also, in the first two examples, if the trigger mob had to be high level to detect the player, it would be a mystery fame as well, and nobody likes mystery fame Tongue Could make it so mobs could be given holylight? Cheesy workaround, I know, riact would probably be just as easy to implement, without the extra baggage.
6  General Category / Future Directions / Some possible adjustments to enchanting? on: January 02, 2010, 07:48:38 pm
Me and Laud worked out this idea today, and just seemed to make sense, I'm wondering what others think of it.

Enchanting is very basic here, and VERY random. It should really be more controlled and controllable. Why should enchantments be limited to making armor stronger and the occasional random effect to dwindle off? Why not a way to bind those random effects to the item? Basically, a permanence spell. Here's our idea for it:

Lvl: 32 cleric (maybe into a new class tree that's more strongly connected to enchanting, but enchant
armor is a cleric spell at the moment, so I'm going with that.)

Req:   30 wisdom, 27 intelligence

Desc: Though tensile strength cannot be made permanent, when the energy bound into an enchanted
piece of armor takes other properties, a ritual binding can be done, using the spiritual energy of
a slain mortal form (use of a corpse as material component? Opening for a soul-capturing spell?).
Being a ritual, and considering the powers necessary to permanently bind magic energies to a
mundane form, this spell may only be groupcast. The dangers of binding magic to armor is as great
as removing them. The more potent the effects to be bound, the more participants required to
safely bind (opposite principles as dispel? Adding participants equating to adding levels, of course.)

As said before, this was a rough idea sketched out pretty quickly. Is this feasible with current code? If not, is it unreasonable to add new code for it? How about the soul capturing aspect? What are player and builder opinions on this idea?

I'd really hate to argue with Dentin on anything, but I definitely have to disagree on a lot of points. Your main concerns in making a tank character are your stats, early on, when practices are easy to come by and plentiful. Con is the most important as it directly affects your hit point totals when levelling. When you're the one taking the beating all the time, you want a lot of hit points. Dex is very important, as Dentin said, for dodge and parry. BUT so is Str. You may notice when fighting weak mobs that they are sometimes "too weak to parry your blows." Str is also requisite for most warrior weapons of any value, whether hitting or tanking, as well as shields. And don't be afraid to MAX THE STATS EARLY! Run them right up to 25, because it gets a lot more time consuming and difficult to do it later on. And it's always nice to reap the benefits of maxxed stats early on, as well. As a side note, for those times when you're hitting, of which you will have plenty, Str also directly affects your total movement, the same as Con affects your hit point total. And all of the aggressive combat skills use movement.
As far as EQ is concerned, look for things with good ac values, and no other effects, and make sure they're Type: ARMOR when you identify them, as these items are enchantable by higher level clerics. There are multitudes of other players who can enchant EQ for you, and most are readily willing to do so (chances for easy exp and the possibility of bragging rights are what make the clerics what we are Cheesy ). Other things to look for in tank EQ, other than the base ac value, are Effects by hit points, Con, -armor, Dex, Str, hp regen, parry, and the rarest of all, dodge. Parry and dodge effects on EQ directly effect your skill value when fighting, and can be IMMENSELY useful. After all, if they can't touch you, they can't kill you. A lot of the staple enchantable EQ in the game is lower- to mid-level, and surprisingly easy to run, so keep your eyes open while you explore new areas as you progress through the game.

Newbie Builders is an oxymoron...... Newbies arent made builders, for one, and for two, not all builders are gods either (me for instance). Any single persons judgement is suspect, which is why even the gods have levels. A lvl 104 gods judgement is automatically reviewed as soon as the action is made, by elder gods. We call them admin for a reason, ya know. All Dentin has done is make it possible for all the 104s, who are around by a far margin more often than admins, the ability to handle these divergant emergencies. I would imagine Gamlin/etc wouldnt have been such an issue or even remembered if lower level gods couldve dealt with him.

If I remember right, Catacombs under Unholy WAS built within the first days of AA, and might even be THE first, possibly second area. And also if I remember right, theres not much there but mirrors, and nostalgia....
