Ok, I have the following problem:
I have created an alias, "vop" that sets a variable, "opponent". It looks like this:

vop = variable opponent $*

So just before I'm about to fight a pig, for instance, I type 'vop pig'.

During the fight I use another alias, "fb"  that interact with my opponent", it looks like this:

fb = use wand $opponent

This Works like a charm, but only the first time after I've created the 'fb' alias!

I can subsequently change the 'opponent' variable via "vop" to, say, "chicken", but when I list the "fb" alias, it says

fb = use wand pig

not "use wand $opponent", which it should?? What am I missing here?

OK, thanks for the reply. I found a way, by using the alt-key and numeric keyboard I can produce all characters. Time-consuming, but it works.

No, there's no zip file like that.  However, you should be able to install Mush-Z without administrator permissions - just install it in your user account directory.

I don't really think there's any effective way to do that if you don't have the characters on your keyboard.  That's something you'll have to figure out in your operating system or computer settings.

On the plus side, you don't actually need the bracket characters for anything (at all), and even the dollar sign is a limited use symbol that you won't need to use very often, if at all.

Hi, please help a total newbie: There are some characters I cant type with my keyboard, for instance square brackets and dollar sign. How can I get them to work?

Sorry if this is an inappropriate place for this question, but I couldn't find anywhere else to ask. I can't use the MushZ client, because I'm using a computer that I don't have an administrator account on. Is there any way I can download the client as a .zip file or any other type of compressed folder so I can use it without installing?

Oh, that's the button off to the side.  Honestly I don't even know how that one is even set up internally.  I've always just assumed that people shut off that button bar soon after they start playing, and never had a real good idea of how to handle it in the general case.  I'll queue it up to take a look at it, but no guarantees - the best thing to do might be to simply remove it so people don't get confused.

I understand this. I have no issue with the function keys, I can set those up with no problem.

What I am having trouble with is the "Cast" button that pops up during battle that is specific to the official client. This button always does "unfreezing fire" which is what I would like to change. It is part of the U.I that displays only while my character is being attacked and goes away whenever I am not in combat.

Familiars do get more powerful with more powerful soulstones, but not by very much.
